Milestones are installed to reassure travelers that the proper path is being followed and to indicate either distance traveled or the remaining distance to a destination.
Action Plan: A specific document describing various steps (including timeline, and responsibilities) to be performed during the implementation of business / process improvements
Within the framework of action plan, a “milestone” is the end of a stage that marks the completion of a step or phase. At this juncture, a review of outcome of activities may help to decide further course of action. In this sense, a "milestone" not only signifies distance traveled (key stages in an action plan) but also indicates direction of travel since key decisions made at milestones may alter the route through the action plan.

Very correctly described. They are those part of action plan at which a review is essential to see the progress made and carryout the course correction according to whether we are ahead in execution of the action, behind the desired point and what needs to be done to correct the situation.
It is a stage which is measurable and / or crucial for effective execution of the action plan. On schedule achievement of a mile stone confirms all is well else one has to review and revise action plan or get paln B, plan C etc rolling.

milestone helps u in knowing how far are you from your set goals to be achieved in action plan..
example: when you have to reach a particular destination by road, you come acrsoss various milestones, which tell you how far is the final destination.

Regarding milestones and action plans, you may find the chapter on milestones in our book "The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan" useful. It could be findable in your local stores. Failing in that, you can always click through our site Executive Onboarding & Leadership Transition Acceleration - PrimeGenesis and get it or some useful white papers there.

Samba has described milestones accurately, so have all others, in other words when you are doing a project, each segment of the work plan has a partial achievement, milestones are set to see what portion has been completed from a path leading to the goal. It is linked with resources and time.

Regarding Milestones
In any process the milestone refers the strategic point after that the result follows automatically. Say for example, in an industrial situation if we plan to implement any advanced technology the milestone is to educate the employees about the new initiative and convince them that it is not against the employees. We know what happened when Government, Bank and Private sectors started of automation of their activities. Similarly for ISO 9000, TQM, TPM, activities.

Action plans are normally long drawn keeping the end result in mind. To achieve these goals we need to have with multiple short term goals to keep a check and ensure that our end goal is time bound. A milestone is nothing but this short term goal. Saji

Well milestone should be taken in a reverse order. where ever one has to reach. split it into some challenging parts. those intervals may be marked as Milestones.
Its good to cross those MILESTONES in order to reach the final destination in a specific time.
