Hi Madhu,
HR manager is a down to earth, empathatic person who has bunch of experience in his hands and who knows beats of each and every employee.. With his experience he should be able to find out probs of employees and effectively communicates to the management and solve it. He should so convincing in his communication that employee can actually share anything with him.
As far as knowledge is concerned, he should have worked on all the activities happening in HR but mostly should now as a HR manager he should be more involved in policies, strategies, cost management, resource allocation, forecasting and retension. He should be able to take more initiatives in terms of growth of company as well as employees.
These are my thoughts.Others can add on this.

Hi Madhu.... Read all the earlier posts n thought i should express my views on this one too....

Though i work as a Technical Trainer but i do deal with all the depts right from Ops till HR n payroll.. i know thats a tough job i do ... phewwww

Being an HR manager is all about being knowledgable, approachable and being human.. I do not actually refer to homo - erectus... hahaha
Now by saying 'being human' what i meant was possessin all human qualities which are already mentioned by my fellow friends in their posts!

Hey but always remember if your a manager always vougue and stick for your team.. never treat them as minors... Its all about Team work you see ..

As far as excel is concerned you dont have to be an expert but basic knowledge is expected to make reports n stuff... n you can always learn ....

So to sum it up ... Just be approachable and respect others ...

Hope that helps !

Hey if you need more of my gyaan just drop me a line and we can chat ...

All the best !

Hi
In my opinion, the HR Team should serve as a bridge between the Management and Staff members; should be easily approachable and accessible; should be friendly with the staff; should be patiently listen to the staff grievances and should help to find a amicable solutions; should earn their respect; keep the workforce motivated through appreciations for good work, rewards, get-togethers etc. HR Manager should be prepared to face all type of pressure -- from management as well as staff at times.

Hi - Best Hr Managers organizes, plans, develops, and directs the implementation and administration of human resources functions and carries out policies and procedures relating to all phases of human resources activities. Directs activities relating to personnel rules and regulations, staffing, employee education and training, management development, labor relations, affirmative action, workers compensation administration, benefits administration, and salary administration. This position may report to the Top Human Resources Officer or the Chief Executive Officer and typically supervises the Employee Relations Manager and/or the Human Resources Manager; however, in smaller organizations all levels of management may not be present.: Approves and directs new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward company goals. Investigates problems incidental to sound and uniform personnel administration, such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, and employee and applicant appeals and grievances. Provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolutions. Keeps records of insurance coverage, pension plan, and personnel transactions, such as hires, promotions, transfers, and terminations. Recommends and implements procedures to reduce absenteeism and turnover. Prepares budget of human resources operations. Recruits, interviews, and selects employees to fill vacant positions. May investigate accidents and prepare reports for insurance carrier. May conduct wage surveys within labor market to determine competitive wage rate. May contract with outside suppliers to provide employee services, such as food services, transportation, or relocation service. Caring enough about people and the organization to deliver all of this with a service-orientation attitude, I find makes for the best HR Managers.

hi,
everyone are adding upon to madhu's qusetion, let me also be part of the wagon with my comments below-
To add upon the posts a HR manager should have down to earth qualities dealing diplomatically with peers adressing issues immediately rather taking time.
Moreover its a cooool job (no coding....) with some common sense to apply for solving complicated issues, we also should agree HR's too have 2much stress...
HR manager is the one who is responsible for choosing the right talent in right profile to extract optimum performance & Involve personally for employees growth.
Rather being management friendly:icon9: (to get their own credits) they need to understand practical difficulties encountered by employees & address them.
Regarding computer literacy' a hr manager by now should have attained knowledge on MS tools & moreover as priyanka has mentioned thay can always learn from work. getting exposed to SAP, ERP will be a value add for the individual.
got pages to add but running short of time,:icon10: friends pl contribute ur share to the thread...

A good HR manager should be friendly with both, the employer and the workers. He has to take care of enhancing productivity which is important for an organization and also look after the employee welfare. If the employees are satisfied, they will work happily and will perform to their best. He should have knowledge of Labour Legislation.

If the workers are not performing as per expectations, the HR manager has to use corrective measures for improving their behaviour without hurting them . This may include Training and Development programmes or Competitions to motivate them to work.

He has to take care of workplace climate. He has to be careful of employees' safety and security, both , physical and mental. He should be always positive and a good decision maker.

Hr manager sould be a good team leader and should be able to assume the role of a team player giving leadership to others at times. He should have good communication skills, better listening skills and excellent negotiating skills.

In all, an HR manager should possess all the soft skills!

Hi Madhu,
A good question, reading these comments by new professional will widen their views about HR MANAGER. As per my opinion half success of HR Manager is in how he deal with employee. If he is people suvey then rest thing bcomes easy to achieve. Good knowledge of applicable labour law is most valuable area and one should keep on updating his knowledge about the amendments. Ego is enemy of HR person, hence he should always keep this blunder on the gate of Factory/Office. HR person need to keep good relation up and down levels. I think if one practice these aspect will be definit successful person in HR.

Hi,
The Best HR manger is one who knows when and where to use the resources. But there should be some basic qualities which makes him best like politeness, Patience, professional maturity, Enthu at work place, and always smiling face even in lots of work pressure. with this knowledge is most important thing. In short the best HR manager is one who fulfill organization goal with employees growth. who has to be a good leader at the same time a good team player also.

HR manager should have good negotiating and convencing skill especially when it comes to negotiating with Workers Unions.
He should have knowledge of past events and IR events and happenings of other organisations as these might become handy while negotiation.
While negotiating salary structure for example it is useful to know the incentive perks and fees given by other companies.
In case of posting employee the growth potential of an employee and morale boosting should be borne in mind.
In short - have that human touch.

Dear all,

No I do not agree with the thoght that HR managers are the best who thinks for the organisation.
In my opinion HR mangers are those who mostly disturbe and try to frustrate our one of the most important resources that is "MAN".
They usually talks hypothetically rather in practical.
By floating such message by the HRians is not good , this is prooving my statement of damaging the " MAN " other than HR in any organisation.
It is the team who runs any organisation and HR is also very important part but I am sorry " They should not think and promote like this"
