Hi Rekha,
Welcome to Citeman, me too is new here and i liked the environment so much.
And Congratulations in your challenging role in the HR world.
Well, the top most thing you have to do as you join assume your new post is to clearly define from your direct superior JD (Job Description) of your current position.
It is best to know what kind of shoes you should use to run your role.
JD's are written document after a Job Analysis has been made.
JOB TITLE: HR GENERALIST
SCOPE OF THE JOB: (Over-all scope of the responsibility, described briefly)
RESPONSIBILITIES: (With Frequencies:Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly)
REPORTING TO: (Direct Superior)
SUBORDINATES:
WORK CONTACTS/DEPARTMENTS:
Once you successfully develop your position's JD, it would be useful for you as you perform your functions, not only as your guide but as a tool to measure your effeciency. You can easily highlight your accomplishments once company calls for evaluation.
Good luck and all the best.

Hi Rekha,
Your role would have been defined even before you had been recruited in the organisation. It is important to find out from your bosses as to what are their expectations. Besides, there will be a lot of learning for you in the department and the organisation. While learning about various existing processes, try to find out how you can improve them. With this attitude, you will always be in demand as you establish yourself as a person who is willing to keep learning and growing.
If then, the current organisation does not acknowledge your efforts, you will be in a position to contribute to another organisation.
